Calabria, Italy — landscape view

The Great South & the Islands

Calabria

Italy’s untouched southern soul

Located at the very tip of Italy’s “boot”, Calabria is one of the country’s most authentic and unspoiled regions — a land where sea, mountains, and ancient traditions still shape everyday life. Geographically, Calabria is unique: surrounded by both the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas and separated from Sicily by the legendary Strait of Messina, it offers extraordinary natural diversity. Crystal-clear coastlines, hidden coves, dramatic cliffs, and white sandy beaches meet forests, mountain plateaus, lakes, and rugged inland villages that seem untouched by time.

Historically, Calabria was part of ancient Magna Graecia and became one of the earliest Greek settlements in southern Italy. Over the centuries, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Normans, and Aragonese all left their mark, creating a layered heritage still visible today in its monasteries, castles, churches, and ancient hilltop towns.

Beyond its coastline, Calabria’s inland landscapes are among the wildest in Italy. The vast forests of Sila National Park, the rugged wilderness of Pollino National Park, and the dramatic mountains of Aspromonte National Park offer some of southern Italy’s most untouched natural scenery. Along the coast, iconic destinations such as Tropea and Scilla reveal the true spirit of Calabria — colourful fishing boats, crystal waters, and a timeless Mediterranean atmosphere.
